Thursday night, we found out that Phil was put on an overseas trip (that left today) that would cause him to miss Avery's 1st birthday Monday, his Elmo party next Sunday, and all the family members that are coming into town to help us celebrate. His squadron is really busy right now, and although they hated to do it to him, the "higher ups" really had no choice but to send him. To say that we all are disappointed would be an understatement, especially Phil, but we are a military family, and this is simply the way it goes. It is not the first special occasion he's missed, and it certainly won't be the last...still it definitely won't be the same without him. Avery and I are still very much looking forward to seeing family and having them here for the party!
With such little notice, we had to plan a few special birthday activities for before Phil left. Last night, Phil took Avery to Toys R Us to pick out a special early birthday present. Then he made Avery pancakes for breakfast this morning, and they played with his new toys from Dad.

Later in the day, we had even more fun opening presents when one came in the mail from Aunt Ashley, Uncle Matt, and Logan!
