Last weekend, we took a short drive and explored nearby Ft. Pickens, a pentagonal historic US military fort on Santa Rosa Island named after American Revolutionary War hero Andrew Pickens. It was completed in 1834 and remained in use until 1947. (Thank you, Wikipedia!) It is also part of Gulf Islands National Seashore. It was a hot day, but the cool air inside of the fort provided welcome relief. It was fun exploring the grounds and learning of the history. We also enjoyed the beautiful drive and the views it provided....water on all sides and white sand everywhere. The best part- it was free! Active duty military can get a pass there to receive free admission into all US national parks.

After a quick dip in the ocean to cool down, we ate a yummy dinner at Peg Leg Pete's.
It was the perfect way to spend our Sunday afternoon!
